Tucked away in one of the most beautiful and peaceful corners of Barcelona, La Font del Gat feels like stepping into a different era. Located inside the historic Jardins de Laribal in the Sants-Montjuïc district, this restaurant occupies a stunning building designed by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1925 for the 1929 International Exposition.
In spring 2025, the Grup Confiteria beautifully reopened the space with the goal of reviving the spirit of the traditional fontades — the lively outdoor gatherings with food, drink, music, and dancing that the people of Barcelona once enjoyed around the fountain in these gardens, which were the city’s first public gardens back in 1908.
The setting is truly magical: surrounded by noucentista gardens designed by Rubió i Tudurí, the restaurant offers two lovely terraces — one facing the elegant Puig i Cadafalch façade and another with panoramic views — creating an oasis of calm and nature. With space for up to 1,000 people, most of the action happens outdoors, accompanied by live music (jazz, rumba, folk or local DJs) whenever the restaurant is open.
The cuisine is classic popular Catalan, honest and flavourful. The menu features grilled sardines, meats and vegetables (espetos), fresh salads, gazpacho, and a giant communal paella (arrossada) served on Sundays. You’ll also find around ten traditional Catalan tapas such as esqueixada (shredded salt cod salad) and coca de recapte.
